TWO THIRDS of South Sudan’s people cannot read, write, understand basic hygiene, or do simple arithmetic.
- Devastating Societal Norms: Early marriage (including forced marriages) and polygamy are the norm. Most young women have five or more children, and most men have two to six wives that they may not support at all.

- Widespread poverty: Over half of what little food there is provided by humanitarian agencies.
